Table Games DO Affect You

Post by Mrs. Secretary on Sat Nov 14, 2009 4:41 pm

Some articles that you may want to review before voting table games into our backyards:

http://www.nocasinoerie.org/jobques.htm

http://casinofacts.org/faq.php ****This one answers some questions that have not been posed yet (from Middleboro, MA-a town where table games may be headed)*******

From the "Vote Yes" website (I have added my two cents on each topic):

The Facts
"For months, residents of Jefferson County have been discussing the prospect of a referendum for table games. We are pleased to receive so much support and are excited at the prospect of this economic growth. We believe now is the time to bring table games to Charles Town Races and Slots." What, in this poor economy when people can hardly afford to pay their mortgage and utility bills, they are going to go spend what money they DON'T have and gamble it all away? NOT THE TIME TO BRING TABLE GAMES TO CHARLES TOWN!!!!!!!!

"The community has expressed a need for additional funds for schools; table games revenue can help meet that need."

"Charles Town Races and Slots intends to hire hundreds of local residents to fill the many new jobs that would come as a result of table games." Yeah, they could end up having teachers quit their teaching positions to work at the racino instead and make more money there.

Al Britton, General Manager, Charles Town Races & Slots
Press Release, August 5, 2009

JOBS

Table games will bring more than 500 new, local jobs to Jefferson County. Could possibly be true, but we're talking low-paying jobs here-Wait staff, Card Dealers, Security, etc.
Charles Town Races & Slots intends to hire hundreds of local residents to fill the many new jobs that would come as a result of table games. They cannot descriminate against people that live outside of our county, so some of these employees will not be "local" residents. Also, if you think about it hard....it could possibly take away jobs from other employers. For instance-if I were seeking a job and applied to Martins and CTRS and CTRS offered me $12/hr versus Martins offering me $7/hr. I would most likely go with the higher paying job, right? Well, if Martins has to compete for employees, then they will need to pay more which will in turn raise the prices of our groceries.
Eligible employees will continue to receive full benefits, tuition reimbursement, and access to the on-site health center. ELIGIBLE? What is that supposed to mean? They will most likely hire on mostly part-time employees so that they are not required by law to offer benefits to these employees.
FACT: Northern Panhandle dealers already earn up to $45,000 per year with tips plus benefits.
Click here for the full jobs fact sheet.
HMMMM....if our county teachers earn $28,000/year and they have the potential of leaving the screaming kids behind to make $45,000/year, they might just do it!!!

EDUCATION

The West Virginia Lottery Commission estimates that $6.4 million would be generated for Jefferson County, the schools, and municipalities in Fiscal Year 2012.
Nearly $4 million of this will go to the Jefferson County Board of Education for capital improvements. The schools will have to pay their teachers more money to keep them from leaving and going to work for CTRS!!!!! So that money will be spent on doing just that!
Click here for the Education and Table Games fact sheet.

HORSEMEN AND FARMLAND PRESERVATION

The Charles Town Horsemen Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) has endorsed table games at Charles Town Races & Slots. Of course they have! The more money made by CTRS means more $$$$ for them!!!
The West Virginia Thoroughbred Breeders Association has endorsed table games at Charles Town Races & Slots. Of course they have! The more money made by CTRS means more $$$$ for them!!
The West Virginia Breeders Classics has endorsed table games at Charles Town Races & Slots.
Table games would generate nearly an additional $4.8 million annually for the purses and breeders funds. Of course they have! The more money made by CTRS means more $$$$ for them!!
In 2008, approximately $39 million was generated by VLT dollars for horseracing purses and breeders funds.

Racino. I like that term. Lots of good thoughts here Mrs. Sec. Thanks for taking so much time to help us become more educated.

I am still leaning towards yes just for the schools. But it is good to know all the facts.

Let me just say......A teacher can leave teaching at ANY given time for MANY better paying jobs. Whether that be for CTRS, driving a truck, waiting tables or washing cars! The reason why they DON'T leave teaching now, tomorrow or in the future is because they LOVE teaching......that is their passion. They are not going to leave what they live for.

Your argument about CTRS vs. Martins: Welcome to everyday way of life when running a business recruiting and hiring. It is now and always will be a competitive market. People rarely leave a job because of money statistics show......"They don't quit their job....they quit their boss". Working environment and atmosphere are WAY more important. People like to feel respected. Money doesn't give respect......people do.

There are pros and cons to everything in life.......There are still way more pros than cons in this debate. Everyone has a different view point and I respect that. Everyone should educate them selves by attending a debate on the matter as I did Wednesday. Extremely informative. The most amazing thing was how unprepared the Vote No team was.....almost embarrassing. Vote yes was extremely prepared and factual with substantial sources of reference. Vote No wasn't even opposed to table games......they just wanted MORE MONEY. I call that GREED.

Please Vote Yes and do the right thing for Jefferson County. And by the way.....did you know that there is a safety net here? If table games are passed, in 5 years if it is completely disastrous (which I don’t think it will be) there is an opportunity for citizens to vote it out and end table games? What I think all will realize is YES Vote was the right thing to do however and won't be necessary but the option is there as a safety net.

TP7370, thanks for sharing your insight. I think the most important part of your post was the fact that there is a "safety net". I think it is great that we can vot it out in 5 years if it does not fit the county. I have always planned on voting YES and this just seals the deal.

Thanks,

Tim

For the out in 5 years are we sure the county won't have to come up with the $500,000 to get it on the ballot.

How is "disastrous" determined? I think it is better that it automatically go on the ballot in 5 years. Disastrous for one segment of the community and disastrous for another segment could be two totally different things.

Just my thoughts.

Also, some of the dealer jobs are going to be upwards of $45,000 per year with full benefits, so for this area that is not low paying.
